Ten8 is a missional week for students, named for Matthew 10:8- “Freely you have received; freely give”.
Students spend a week volunteering for a local charity or cause that benefits the Edinburgh community. One of these teams came to Bethany and spent the weekend helping out in different areas across the organisation. So we sat down with Olivia, Jenny, Ingrid and Sarah to hear all about their experience.
Why did you choose to spend your volunteering time with Bethany?
Olivia: I had heard about Bethany through church and I admired how the charity is set up on the basis of Christian love. I felt guilty seeing how much of a problem rough sleeping is in Edinburgh, but powerless to help.
Sarah: I wanted to do something constructive to help with the issue of homelessness; it is such a big issue in Edinburgh.
In your view, why is volunteering important?
Jenny: On a practical level, the work needs doing and needs people to do it
Ingrid: I have been given so much and I wanted an opportunity to give back. I want to connect with the local community and not just remain inside the student bubble. Volunteering allows me to see a diversity in people beyond those I encounter day to day. It also means that I make decisions for other people and not just on what I want.
