Recently our Aberdeen team launched a skill-based employability workshop. The workshop focussed on developing people’s IT and communication skills through the production of a magazine. One of the participants was Kenneth. Here’s his story:

It’s hard being homeless. What is even harder is getting the right care and support when you are battling depression and can’t seem to find a way out.

After a relationship broke down I found myself without a roof and in dire financial difficulties. I’d reached breaking point and did not know where to go from there. I just couldn’t cope.

I came across a leaflet about Bethany  that described their project. I decided to attend to see what it was like and I was pleasantly surprised. It was great to finally be able to talk to someone about what I was going through over a cup of tea.

The support they offered me was structured, which is something that I really needed. They encouraged me to keep a positive outlook as they helped me to move forward with my life.

The support and encouragement I found at Bethany was completely unexpected. I was surprised at how helpful Jan and Ali were. They were genuinely interested in helping me. Meeting them was like meeting angels in disguise.

What struck me most was that they thought so highly of me. They saw my potential and treated me with dignity and respect. They always went the extra mile to provide me with the help and support that I so desperately needed.

By supporting me in finding accommodation and a job they helped me get back on the right track. I am now developing skills to live independently and I am getting more involved in the local community. I am rebuilding my life and I am grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity of a fresh start.
