For the past few years, Liz has been volunteering with the Bethany Care Van. We asked Liz to share her volunteering experiences with us, and to tell us what it means to her to be involved with one of Bethany’s most relied upon frontline services.
“It’s been a privilege to volunteer with the Bethany lunchtime care van over the past few years. Encouraged by my sister to join the team, I quickly realised how sandwiches, hot drinks, chocolate biscuits and a listening ear are a winning formula! Chatting with those using the van, it is clear what a valuable service it provides for anyone affected by homelessness.”
“I’ve been equally impressed to hear about the commitment from many churches and individuals volunteering to enable the van to offer a regular and reliable service, providing a lifeline to many each day.
My volunteering with Bethany has also led me to appreciate the wider work of the charity, including its invaluable work with those facing addiction, the support it offers those facing isolation and the night time care shelter which I’ve also had the privilege of helping at.
“In finding out more about Bethany’s vision to ‘end homelessness one person at time’, I had no hesitation in making Bethany one of my chosen charities to fundraise for this year, setting myself various marathon and physical challenges to mark my 40th birthday. It’s been a gruelling year, including completing the Kilimanjaro and Edinburgh marathons, 3 Peaks 24 hour challenge and a 40 mile race through the Lake District. One of the key motivations keeping me going through all these challenges has been knowing what outstanding work the Bethany team do and how the money I’ve raised will be helping to offer so much more than a sandwich and a drink. It’s an honour to volunteer with Bethany Christian Trust and I’d really recommend the opportunity to anyone looking to get more involved.”
The support of volunteers like Liz makes a huge difference to the lives of real people.
