In the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak and government guidelines we are taking sensible precautions and are moving our Bethany Big Sleep Out ONLINE and bringing the spirit of the Sleep Out to you, virtually.

We’re calling on individuals and small groups to still sleep out on the 20th but instead in a secure, isolated environment such as a private garden, allotments, garage or even a fort in your living room! This is not a decision we take lightly and we understand you may be disappointed or no longer willing to take part but we also feel by completely cancelling the event it would not fit in to the Bethany spirit.

For the most of us, we are privileged to be able to stay home and self-isolate where needed but for those homeless or in precarious housing situations, who are more likely to suffer from underlying health conditions there isn’t that option. We want to honour the men, women and families who use Bethany services by still raising vitals funds and support.

We want all our participants taking part to feel safe and secure so we recommend the following common sense options:

– Participating in groups of no larger than 3 people.

– To not participate if you are feeling ill or experiencing symptoms before the event.

To keep checking NHS guidelines daily and taking any precautions needed.

Alasdair Bennett, Chief Executive of Bethany Christian Trust said: “We are adapting to a set of highly unusual circumstances in relation to COVID-19.  We want to keep our supporters safe whilst also facilitating their strong desire to relieve suffering for people who are homeless and vulnerable in Scotland.  The dispersed event is limited to two or three participants at each safe location.  This is a practical solution by which people can still be sponsored to sleep out and simultaneously raise awareness of the major challenges faced by people who are rough sleeping.

We are fully operating all Bethany services currently but we will need financial support to enable and sustain this, now more than ever. The need is significant across Scotland and we appeal to our supporters to get behind this event in its new virtual form.  Please consider sponsoring anyone you know who is taking part, or contribute directly in support of the event here. Your support is hugely appreciated.”

More details to follow including how to participate online and our virtual schedule for the evening.
