I am a 4th year Social Sciences student at Edinburgh Napier University.

I first came into contact with Bethany through a placement for my course. I spent a week with the Community Development team working with various community groups.

I took part in the Computer drop-in where I helped people with computer skills and helped them with emails, housing applications and job applications.

I also went to the Upcycling group where old furniture was revamped into new pieces to be sold in the Bethany shops, that was really fun.

I attended a creative writing group where I was extremely impressed by the standard of work and enthusiasm of the participants.

I then went to Gracemount Nursery to help with the Rag n’ Roll group’s open day sale, it was fantastic to see the sense of community and pride within the group of women.

Finally, I spent an afternoon with the Care Van, the need for this service was clear and it was fantastic to meet with volunteers to see their passion to help people in need.

It was also great to spend time in an office setting to understand the behind the scenes operations of a charity to see how it is run and how it all works.

I am so happy that I got a placement with Bethany. I really benefited from the experience. It was great to see how the charity is making a difference in the city to groups who need help and support. It was fantastic to come into contact with people I would never have met.

I wasn’t aware of the range of opportunities that Bethany provides and was lucky to have a real insight into the work of different groups, their talents and skills. This also allowed me to develop my communication skills as I was coming into contact with so many different people from a variety of backgrounds and origins.

I would highly recommend volunteering with Bethany Christian Trust if you’re interested. There’s so much to be a part of with many options to pick from, one activity or group is bound to take your interest. It is fantastic to feel a part of the community where you are making a difference to those around you.
